October is National Co-op Month, which gives us a good reason to talk about what it means to be a cooperative and, more importantly, what that looks like here at Five Star Co-op.
As a cooperative, Five Star is built around the farmers and communities we serve. Our members have a stake in what we do, and their needs help shape how we grow and move forward.
This year’s Coop Month theme is Built for This Moment. And when we think about Five Star, that theme fits pretty well. Because being built for this moment isn’t about having all the newest equipment or offering the most services. It’s about being ready to show up when our members need us. And right now, that means harvest.
Harvest is one of the busiest times of the year, and it’s a good reminder that success isn’t just about what’s in the bin. It’s about getting the job done safely, taking care of people around us, and making it home at the end of the day.
At Five Star, we call that Safety First and Yielding Success.
But, it also means everything that goes into keeping your operation moving throughout the year.
We’re Built for Harvest
If there’s ever a time when you really see agriculture in motion, it’s harvest season.
Combines are running, trucks are rolling, and grain is coming into our locations. Our grain teams are busy keeping things moving and helping farmers get their crops where they need to go. But with all that activity comes a good reminder to slow down and keep safety at the front of the list. Watch for people and equipment around the farm and at the elevator. Give yourself extra time. And don’t let a busy day turn into a rushed one.
Because Yielding Success isn’t just about what’s in the bin. It’s about everyone getting home safe.
We know harvest doesn’t always go exactly as planned. Weather changes, markets move, equipment breaks down, and plans change.
That’s why having a local team you can call matters.
Whether you’re delivering grain, checking bids, working through a contract, or using Five Star LINK to keep up with your account, we’re here to make harvest a little easier.
We’re Built to Help You Make the Next Decision
Farming comes with a lot of decisions. And usually, you don’t have all the information you need when you have to make them. That’s where our agronomy team comes in.
Our agronomists work with farmers throughout the year, from seed and fertilizer decisions to crop protection and field checks. They’re out in the field, looking at what’s happening and working with you to figure out what comes next.
We also have programs like RateStar to help give our members more options when it comes to financing inputs.
We’re not here to make every decision for you. We’re here to give you the people, products and information you need to make the best decision for your operation.
We’re Built for the Whole Operation
Your farm doesn’t stop being a farm when you’re done in the field. You still need feed. You need fuel. You might need propane. You might need a part for a piece of equipment. And, at some point during harvest, you probably need a cold drink, too.
That’s one of the benefits of having a full-service cooperative. Whether you’re in the field, at the elevator or working on something at home, Five Star has people and services to help keep things moving.
Five Star Cooperative has agronomy, grain, feed, energy and retail all working together to serve our members. And we’re continuing to add to what we can offer. Our NAPA Auto Parts Store acquisition in Riceville is one example. Five Star Class A members can receive special pricing, giving members another resource when they need parts.
We’re always looking for ways to offer more value to our members and make it easier to get the products and services they need.
We’re Built to Keep Growing
Being built for this moment also means thinking about what’s next.
Five Star continues to invest in our locations, equipment, technology and people so we can keep up with the needs of our members. Agriculture is always changing, and we know we have to change with it. What worked 20 years ago might not be what farmers need 20 years from now.
From expanding the services, we offer to investing in technology like Five Star LINK, we’re always looking for ways to keep up with what our members need. We know agriculture doesn’t stand still, and neither can we.
Our job is to keep listening, keep learning and keep finding ways to make Five Star more useful to our members and customers.
We’re Built Around People
At the end of the day, this is what being a cooperative is really about the people who make it work.
The farmer delivering grain.
The agronomist checking a field.
The driver putting miles on the road.
The in-office team member answering the phone.
The team member loading feed or filling a propane tank.
And the members who continue to support and invest in Five Star.
Every one of these people plays a part in keeping our cooperative moving. And during harvest, every one of them deserves to make it home safely.
Five Star isn’t just a business that happens to operate in rural communities. We’re part of those communities, and our members are a big part of why we’re here.
Built for This Moment. Built Together.
At Five Star, being a cooperative means we’re in this together. Our members, team members, farmers and communities all have a part in making Five Star what it is today.
This Co-op Month, we’re celebrating the people who make our cooperative possible and the work we get to do together. From helping members through another busy harvest to continuing to invest in what’s next, we’re proud to be here for the people who count on us.
And while a good yield, a full bin and a job well done are worth celebrating, there’s nothing more important than making sure everyone gets home safely.
Thanks for being part of Five Star. We’re proud to stand alongside you, this harvest season and every season to come.
