A unique opportunity exists for a dynamic, results-oriented leader to join Five Star Cooperative as its new Chief Executive Officer.  

  • This position will appeal to a seasoned leader with a passion for agriculture while working within the federated cooperative system.  Five Star has regional affiliations with Land ‘O Lakes, CHS AGP and CoBank. 
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in carrying on a long tradition of serving member/owners while working in partnership with an elected nine-member Board of Directors
  • Create an environment with an "open door policy" in which all employees and members can openly discuss suggestions or concerns.  Must be willing to travel to co-op locations and member farms for in-person feedback and relationship building.

Five Star Cooperative is highly diversified with a grain, agronomy, feed, precision ag, energy, and hardware division with a topline that ranges from $300 to $500 million with 16 locations in 13 cities.  This position would provide leadership to 160 full-time, 15 part-time and 35 seasonal employees.

Given the current product portfolio, someone with significant experience in agronomy and grain, who enjoys navigating the associated challenges with growers, marketplaces, and an ever-changing industry. Prior experience in the feed, and energy businesses highly desired.  Other qualifications include:

  • The successful candidate will be a seasoned, business performance driver who has experienced the complexity of managing a diverse portfolio and multi-line of business with retail/wholesale/service organization, much of which is highly seasonal in nature.
  • With a track record of creating a strong team dynamic through clear, consistent, and open communications, the new CEO will have the ability to create a strategy for change that maps out a clear path forward and works to lead the organization in a style that generates accountability to deliver results while generating excitement about the organization’s potential.  Ability to recruit, develop, and retain a top-caliber team.
  • Cooperate with the Board to create and follow policies that are consistent with coop values, mission, and vision statements.
  • Relationship building and relationship management skills required when working with staff, Board, member stakeholders, members of the banking community, and operational alliance partners and dealer network.
  • Strong executive presence that model’s behavior based on ethics and integrity.
  • Responsibility for full P&L with prior experience in the generation, delivery, and ongoing management of budget is strongly desired.
  • A successful candidate will have a strong community orientation by serving on or supporting existing community organizations and their respective pursuits.
  • Post-secondary level education in related field preferred (e.g., business administration, agronomy, marketing or equivalent, etc.) or equivalent years’ experience strongly desired.



  • Position is based out of Five Star’s home office in New Hampton, Iowa.
  • Preference is for incumbent to live within the current geographic trade territory.
  • Position will require local and some domestic travel to attend various industry events.
